Caravaggio_-_Bacco_adolescente_-_Google_Art_ProjectBefore going out today I sat down and read the section “Wine” from Les Fleurs Du Mal by Charles Baudelaire.  Interesting section to say the least and short.  I particularly liked this part at the beginning of “The Soul Of The Wine”,

sang by night in its bottles:  ‘Dear mankind — dear and disinherited!  Break the seal of scarlet wax that darkens my glass jail, and I shall bring you light and brotherhood!

Such a lovely way to think of the effects of wine.  How wonderfully it smooths out the evils of life with bacchian joys.

A little while later I went to the local Goodwill to check out some of the deals and lo and behold I actually found a book worth getting (never do I find anything there), The Wine Bible by Karen McNeil (26-Mar-2002) Paperback.

Strange Coincidence?  I can’t say but I have this kind of stuff happen all the time.  Can’t wait to read through it though.

  1. Have you read The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam? It utilizes an extended metaphor about wine and the intoxication effects as getting closer to the divine. I wouldn’t be surprised if you come across a slim edition of that poem at the Goodwill…
